As a communications leader I often get asked how one can enhance their presence for effective leadership, better relationship building, and to leave a lasting impact during an interaction. Being an impactful leader has a lot to do with how you come across in the presence of people. While nothing can beat good content and intelligence, there are things you can work on to build on your physical presence.

Here are 6 habits that I can think of which could immediately help you make an impact through presence:

Be aware of your body language: Stand up straight, make eye contact, and smile. Your body language should project confidence and openness.

Speak clearly and confidently: Project your voice so that everyone can hear you, and don’t be afraid to be assertive.

Listen attentively: When someone is speaking to you, give them your full attention and don’t interrupt. This shows that you are interested in what they have to say.

Ask questions: Asking questions shows that you are engaged and interested in the conversation. It also helps you to learn more about the topic at hand.

Be present in the moment: Don’t let your mind wander or check your phone. When you are present, you are more likely to make a good impression and connect with others.

Be authentic: Don’t try to be someone you’re not. People can tell when you’re being fake, and it will make you seem less credible.

When you make an effort to be present and authentic, you will naturally project confidence and charisma. This will make you more likely to make an impact on others and achieve your goals. Some of the things that I have benefitted from immensely are:

  • Dressing professionally and appropriately for any occasion. I am more than particular about how I appear at any given occasion. If the attire has to be formal then I would put in that effort to appear formal for the occasion, even if it is in a Saree. Psst… each saree is special in its own way.
  • Being well-prepared for a meeting or presentation. I read up before a presentation or meeting. I am not very good with memorizing numbers so I make notes and then refer to them while I speak, there is no shame in that. It just shows that you have put in the work.
  • Being mindful of my surroundings and the people I am interacting with. I often tend to find common ground to make the conversation interesting.
  • Treat people like you would like to be treated and therefore it is important to be respectful of others’ time and opinions. Give them a chance to put their point forward and even if you have contrary views, there are respectful ways of conveying it during a conversation.
  • While there can be times when you are not feeling very upbeat, in such times I try to keep a positive and enthusiastic attitude. Smile when you are in a bad mood, it elevates the mood immediately. Try it.

I hope some of these insights help you with enhancing your presence.
