The International Day of Happiness is celebrated throughout the world on 20th March. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly on 28th June 2012

Happiness. It’s a word we chase, a feeling we crave. But what exactly is it, and how can we cultivate it in our lives? Philosophers and authors have pondered this question for centuries, offering a wealth of wisdom. Here are 6 habits you can incorporate into your daily routine, inspired by these wise words, to unlock a more joyful you:

An Attitude of Gratitude: “Reflect upon your present blessings, of which every man has many.”Marcus Aurelius, Meditations. Taking time to appreciate the good things in your life, big or small, shifts your focus from what’s lacking to what you already have. Try keeping a gratitude journal, or simply taking a few minutes each day to reflect on what you’re thankful for. My nightly meditation helps me with maintaining a positive mindset.

Nurture Your Body: “The body is the temple of the soul.”Mahatma Gandhi. Just like a beautiful garden needs fertile soil, true happiness thrives on a healthy body. Prioritize sleep (7-8 hours for adults), eat nourishing foods, and get regular exercise. You’ll be surprised at how much better you feel physically and mentally. I have learnt this the hard way, I now make sure I get 7-8 hours of shut eye, and my share of greens everyday.

Connect with Others: “Humans are social creatures who need connection with others.”Gretchen Rubin, The Happiness Project. Strong relationships are a cornerstone of happiness. Make time for loved ones, nurture friendships, and build a support system that uplifts you. While the internet is full of telling everyone to keep people at a distance, do take out time for people who make you happy and bring a smile to your face.

Find Your Purpose: “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” Ralph Waldo Emerson. Having a sense of purpose, something that gives your life meaning, contributes significantly to happiness. Explore your passions, volunteer your time, or set goals that make a difference in the world. Painting, writing, reading, traveling and spirituality are some of the things that I have discovered bring me constant happiness. You can find your joys too!

Practice Mindfulness: “Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only one day, let us live it.”Gautama Buddha. Mindfulness is the art of being present in the moment. Meditation, yoga, or simply taking deep breaths throughout the day can help you focus on what’s happening now, instead of dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. Being in the moment was tough for me, as an overthinking I would peel off everything and make sure to overthink the slightest of situation or comment. Meditation and a constant check of getting yourself back to the present moment helps. It takes time, but it works.

Embrace Growth: “The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.”Ralph Waldo Emerson. Happiness is not a static state, but a journey of continuous learning and growth. Challenge yourself, step outside your comfort zone, and embrace opportunities to learn new things. Small steps and big leaps, all are a part of this wonderful journey. There could be days that you don’t want to move, it is ok. As long as you keep moving toward something in the larger scheme of things.

Books to Spark More Joy:

“The Happiness Project” by Gretchen Rubin explores her year-long quest to test different happiness philosophies.

“The Power of Positive Thinking” by Dr. Shiv Khera explores the impact of our mindset on our happiness and success.

Happiness is a personal journey. What works for one person might not work for another.

Experiment, find what brings you joy, and incorporate these habits into your life to cultivate a more fulfilling and happy existence.
